vCard QR Code Business Card

By Sheraz Khan

A paper business card is easy to lose. It sits in a pocket, it gets wet, or it is thrown away at the end of the day. A vCard QR code fixes that. You print one code on your card, a person scans it, and your name, phone, email, and website are saved to their phone in one tap. No typing, no spelling mistakes, no lost card. This guide shows you how to turn your business card into a free vCard QR code. The code is made with the free vCard QR code generator. It is free, it needs no sign-up, and the code never expires.

What is a vCard QR code?

A vCard is a standard way to share contact details. It is the same format that phones and email apps use when you share a contact. A vCard QR code holds your contact details in that format, written into the code itself. When a phone scans the code, it reads the details and offers to save them as a new contact. The person taps Save, and your name, phone, email, and website are in their phone. A vCard QR code is a static code, so the details are stored in the code itself and the code never expires. If you change your phone number or email later, you must make a new code.

How to make a vCard QR code

Making a vCard code takes less than a minute. Open the free vCard QR code generator. The tool opens on the vCard tab. You will see fields for First name, Last name, Phone, Email, Company, and Website. The fields are empty when you open the tab, and each one shows a grey hint. Type your first name and last name. Type your phone number, including the country code. Pick your country in the box called Country, and the code fills in by itself, for example +1 for the United States. Type your email address and your website if you have one. The preview updates as you type, and the line under it shows the exact vCard the code holds. When the preview is right, click Download PNG to save the code. Print it on your business card.

Worked example: Sara Ahmed

Here is a full worked example. Imagine a baker called Sara Ahmed. Her phone is +1 555 123 4567 and her email is sara@example.com. Open the vCard tab. Type Sara in First name and Ahmed in Last name. Pick United States in the Country box, so the code is +1, and type 555 123 4567 in the Phone box. Type sara@example.com in the Email box. The preview shows the code. The line under it shows the vCard, which looks like this: BEGIN:VCARD, VERSION:3.0, N:Ahmed;Sara, FN:Sara Ahmed, TEL:+1 555 123 4567, EMAIL:sara@example.com, END:VCARD. Download the code as a PNG and print it on a business card. When a customer scans it, Sara’s contact is saved to their phone. The code below is a real code made with this tool for Sara Ahmed.

What to put on your vCard

Put only what people need. Your first name and last name, your phone number, your email address, and your website are enough for most people. Add your company name if you have one. Do not add too much. Every extra line makes the code denser, with more small squares, and a very dense code is harder to scan. Leave out your home address unless people need to visit you. Leave out a fax number. Keep the phone number to one number, the one you answer. If you have two numbers, pick the main one. A clean vCard scans better than a crowded one.

Where to use a vCard QR code

The best place is on your business card, next to your printed details. People who prefer paper can read the card, and people who prefer a phone can scan the code. You can also put the code in your email signature, so every email you send carries your contact. Put it on a name badge at an event, so people you meet can save your details without typing. Put it on a shop counter or a reception desk, so visitors can save the shop number. Put it on your CV, so a hiring manager can save your details in one tap. Anywhere your contact details appear, a vCard code makes them easier to save.

How to print it on a business card

A business card is small, so the code must be big enough to scan. Print the code at least 2 centimetres across, and leave a white border around it. Put the code on the back of the card if the front is full, or in a corner of the front. Use a dark code on a white background. Do not print the code over a photo or a coloured pattern, because the phone will struggle to read it. Use a download size of 512 pixels for a card. After you print, scan the printed card with your own phone. Check that the name, phone, and email are right. If anything is wrong, fix the details, make a new code, and print it again.

What to do if the code will not scan

Most vCard code problems have a simple fix. First, check that you did not add too much. A vCard with a long note or many fields makes a very dense code. Keep it to name, phone, email, and website. Second, print the code bigger. A small code on a business card can be hard to read. Third, check the contrast. A dark code on white scans best. Fourth, check that the phone number has its country code. A number without a country code may save as a local number that does not dial. Fifth, test the code with your own phone before you print lots of cards. If your phone saves the contact, most phones will.

FAQs

Does a vCard QR code need an app to scan?

No. Most modern phones read a QR code with the built-in camera. Open the camera, point it at the code, and tap the notice. The phone offers to save the contact. Tap Save and it is done.

Does a vCard QR code expire?

No. A vCard code from this site is a static code, so it never expires. It works for as long as the details it holds are still true. If you change your number or email, make a new code.

Can I put a photo in a vCard QR code?

A vCard can hold a photo, but it makes the code very dense and hard to scan. It is better to keep the code to text details only. Your photo is already on your business card or your profile.

Will the contact save on both Android and iPhone?

Yes. Both Android and iPhone read vCard QR codes and offer to save the contact. Very old phones may need a free QR scanner app, but most phones made in the last few years work without one.

Can I add a logo to a vCard QR code?

Yes. Upload your logo in the box called Add your logo and set error correction to High. Keep the logo small. You can read more in our guide QR Code with Logo.
