How to make a Google Maps QR code

Making a maps QR code takes less than a minute. Follow these steps.

  1. Open Google Maps and find your place. Search for your shop, office, event venue or home address. Tap the place, and copy the link, or note the latitude and longitude from the map.
  2. Paste your map link into the URL tool, or type the latitude and longitude into the Location tool above. A latitude and longitude pair, such as 40.7128, -74.0060, points to an exact spot on the map.
  3. Check the live preview. The code updates as you type, and the text under the preview shows the full map link stored in the code.
  4. Download the code as a PNG for a screen or a small print, or as an SVG for a large print. Test it with your own phone before you print it, and check that Google Maps opens at the right place.
  5. Print the code or show it on a screen. Put it on your business card, your flyer, your invitation, your website or a sign at the door.

What is a Google Maps QR code

A Google Maps QR code stores a link to a place on Google Maps. When a phone scans it, Google Maps opens with that place on the map. The person can see where you are, get directions from where they are now, see how long the trip will take, and start navigation in one tap. They do not have to type your address, spell a street name, or search for you.

The code can link to a named place, such as a shop or a restaurant, or to a set of coordinates, such as a meeting point in a park, a car park or a field. Named places are easy to find. Coordinates are best when there is no name, such as a gate, a trail head or a market stall.

Where to use a Google Maps QR code

Shops, cafes and restaurants use maps codes on business cards, flyers and menus, so a new customer can find them without asking for directions. Offices and clinics use them on appointment letters and on their website contact page, so visitors arrive on time. Hotels, guesthouses and holiday rentals use them in booking emails and in rooms, so guests can find their way back after a day out.

Event organisers use maps codes on invitations and tickets, so guests find the venue, even if it is in a park, a hall or a farm. Estate agents use them on For Sale signs and on property flyers, so a buyer can get directions to a house. Market stalls and food trucks use them on boards, because a stall moves and a map link is easier than a long address.

Directions, parking and public transport

A maps code does more than show a dot. Once Google Maps is open, the person can choose to drive, walk, cycle or take public transport, plus see the time it will take. They can see parking nearby and get a route that avoids roadworks. For a business, that is real help for a first-time visitor who might arrive late if they get lost.

If your place is hard to find, add a note in the map link. Pin the exact entrance, not the centre of a large site. For a large site, such as a farm, a sports ground or a hospital, pin the car park or the main entrance. Test the pin with a fresh search, and walk the route yourself if you can.

Google Maps QR codes for weddings and family events

Weddings, family parties and reunion events are often held in places guests have never visited, such as a farm, a church hall or a garden. A maps code on the invitation saves guests from getting lost and arriving late. Put the code on the invitation and on a sign at the nearest car park, so guests who are driving can start navigation as soon as they park.

For an outdoor event, pin the exact field or gate, not the postcode of the farm, because a postcode can cover a wide area. For a hotel wedding, pin the hotel entrance and the car park. Guests can share the code with the taxi driver or with a friend who is driving them, which is much easier than reading out an address on the phone.

Printing a Google Maps QR code

Print the code dark on white, with a white border. A code of about 4 cm works for a business card or a flyer. For a sign at the door or a poster, make it at least 10 cm so people can scan it from a normal distance. Use the SVG download for large prints, because it stays sharp. Test a print with an iPhone and an Android phone, in the place where it will be used, and check that Maps opens at the right place.

Troubleshooting a maps QR code

If Maps opens at the wrong place, the link or the coordinates are wrong. Check the latitude and longitude. Latitude is north and south, longitude is east and west, and a minus sign matters. Swap the numbers and you land on the other side of the world. Copy the link straight from Google Maps instead of typing it, to avoid a typo.

If the code will not scan, it may be too small, printed with low contrast, or on a shiny surface. Make it bigger and print it dark on white. If Maps does not open, check that the phone has Google Maps installed. On an iPhone without Google Maps, the link will open in a browser instead, which still shows the map.

Privacy and your location

A maps code is public. Anyone who scans it can see the place you chose. Only link to a public place, such as your shop, your office or an event venue. Do not put your home address on a code you will show in public, unless you want strangers to know where you live. Use a work address or a meeting point in public instead.

Your code is made in your browser. We do not store the place or the link you type, and we do not ask for your email to make a code. The details are only in the code you download.
